Extension of the Upper Rio Grande Water Operations Model for New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission

The Upper Rio Grande Water Operations Model (URGWOM) is a RiverWare model used by state, federal, tribal, and other water managers in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas to assist with complex accounting in the Rio Grande Basin, for short-term forecasting of conditions in the Basin, and for long-term planning studies.

Working with the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (NMISC), Hydros extended the model downstream through Hudspeth County, Texas, including detailed modeling of the Rio Grande Project irrigation system serving over 100,000 acres.  This model expansion includes complex operating rules and accounting, surface-groundwater interaction, and consumptive use simulations.  The expansion of URGWOM has helped NMISC and the inter-agency URGWOM team make decisions ahead of time, because they are able to better project water available for irrigators in the Rio Grande project, and deliveries for Rio Grande Compact obligations.  This modeling work was completed in September, 2022.
